The Bennu archetype is found in mythologies of Arabian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Chinese, Indian and Phoenician peoples. It is known by many names most notably the Phoenix but also Firebird. The mythic storyline varies but basically tells of a bird with beautiful plumage that recreates itself from fire after it's thousand-year life cycle.
In Ancient Egypt the fruit of the palm tree, as well as the tree itself, was known as bennu. The bennu bird is mostly described as an ibis in Egyptian lore but later iterations of the fierce firebird have little resemblance to this specie. The bennu was considered the heart/soul of Osiris as well as the heart/soul of Ra. Millions (!) of different ibis-type birds have been found mummified in tombs of Pharaohs. Boston University is undertaking a study to determine the DNA of these birds and track the genetic change over thousands of years. At least one ibis was extracted from the heart cavity of a mummified human.
There h
as been much speculation about which specie of ibis would most fit the profile of the Bennu. One guess is a large extinct specie of great heron that was indigenous to Arabia. Another ibis, the Hadada, seems to be a more likely candidate. This bird loudly announces its presence by calling out its own name; ha-Da-DA. In Egyptian mythology Ra called into being all species of creation by saying it's name. The Bennu, by saying his own name, was called The Self-Created One. The Hadada has a grey body with black legs and iridescent green wings. Iridescenc
e is an optical phenomenon caused by turning the angle of light on a surface with multiple refractive, transparent planes. The light is amplified by the multiple surfaces and creates shine. As the Hadada spreads its' wings on launch, the turning angles of refracted light on infinite transparent surfaces flash repeatedly to create shine.
In the Book of Exodus 33:20 God says "Thou canst no
t see my face: for there shall no man see Me and live". The Hebrew word used for face in this verse is panim which means turnings. The optical phen
omenon caused by turning the angle of light with infinite refractive, transparent planes creates fire and no man could survive. Panim is amazingly like the Greek word Phuein which means permeating light and is symbolized by the sign of Phi. Phi is the Golden Ratio in mathematics and art. Plato describes his five regular solids calculated by the Golden Ratio.

Dakkel is the Hebrew word for palm tree which must surely be the origin of dactylos the Greek word for finger. The rungs of dead fronds mark the passing of each year. The feather/fingers of the Ibis are as numerous as a thousand years.
The Arabic word for ibis is waben, from bennu, but also has the meaning of rise and shine. The Coptic word ouoein is derived from waben and is pronounced one. Ouoein is used in the Coptic 'Book of Thomas' to describe the light of the Father that resides in the heart of men. The akaat (fruit) of the Doum Palm indigenous to highlands of Ethiopia has a similar typology in the Amharic language; akaat means unity and the number one. "Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is one".
panim - shimmering salt pan flats/plat/facet, fought over ferociously in ancient Africa and Middle east, often cause of war, trade. Salt may be more valuable than the salted foods preserved by that salt. pan - ben-nu - bin? Do Ibis flocks feed at flat shimmering ponds like flamingos?
ReplyDeleteGiza angular pyramids (covered by white "glaze") originally and topped by shimmering benben pyramidion?
Did Hebrews ever make pyramid forms, as did Nubian?
I asked an Eritrean and Ethiopian about doum, they knew akaat but not arkobkobai.
akaat ~ ahad (Arabic) Sunday, (Spanish) domingo

The pyramid shape originates from the Vega star system. See post on Abracadabra. Triangular form is Shield of David. However, there was an ancient stringed instrument with a triangular base. This has something to do with plucking the Divine Gid to create a vibration. Vibration (word) is creative force. I am working on this.
ReplyDeleteDuad is the father/son combo. Moisture rises through the tree (oud, wood, shroud) to the fronds and then up into the atmosphere (plume)until the sun heats it up and it falls to the earth. The bennu is describing the hydrologic cycle. Daedalus myth is also describing same cycle.
Hadada (oud) eats worms and bugs and I don't know if it's habitat is salt flats. Information on Africa is hard to find without a eurocentric slant. But you are right - salt is, of course, the most valuable platonic solid. I did not think of that. The abraxas stone may be emulating salt.

The only Iridescent part of human is the eye. The iris shines in the dark. Photography is able to capture the flash of the multiple planes of refraction in the iris.

I don't know - maybe! To look for origin of palm I would investigate Hamsa tradition.

pedant note: ibis feathers are scales, their fingers are reduced to tiny claws at the front of the wings (3 only I think).
ReplyDeleteThe palm frond and bird wing both can spread out to a wheel-like radiation of frondlets/feathers, or a crown-like form (Dakota head dress, Maori head dress) if a human manipulates it.

(see my comments on galenk as hinge/tongue/link of male dome shield to female dome hut)
ReplyDeleteI'd wondered where the Latin rota was derived from, similar to kota (ring, crown).
The round shield covered the hut entry, the primitive hoop door. Initially it was woven branches and inserted leaves, but an animal hide/pelt was eventually added, held tensionally by a rattan(thread/rota/rope) through holes. A small badger/antelope hide could be fastened either as a cross (ped only) or a hexagon (ped/head/tail). This became both the first leather defensive shield and the first wheel (hoop with radiating spokes), though not used for carts until much much later. The shield of David was a duo-triangle (trigeminal?) surrounded by a circle.
The rectangular door of today only evolved after the hut was set upon a step/tepe/stilt, before that doorways were rounded & shielded to prevent ground entry of pests/flood/mud, and still before that the dome base was lifted for entry (the whole dome was the "door", inside was endu) and a short forked branch post(trunk/throne) held it up during hot midday for shade. The male's more portable dome eventually became preferred as shading device, shield & basket, and the pelt was further waterproofed and strengthened for roundboats (koofah, parasal).

I think "rota" is related to Ruti (sphinx), Ruth, rut and red. The shield of David was a relatively recent development (around first century).
ReplyDeleteoud, shroud, cloud, woad (plant to make blue dye). The linen wrappings of Egyptian mummies were dyed blue using the woad plant. Blue was the color of heaven/eternity. I wonder if this has a connection to Taureg blue?
dodecahedron is the platonic shape of creation comes from duad (father/son) 12 (number of zodiac) hedron (hydrologic cycle).

I forgot the most important! toNGue!
ReplyDeleteThe male dome / shield / woven hoop became the element of invention for the hide drum, bronze gong, star net (hexa, penta, quadra, septa, octa)bow (taut star-net of root/rattan line, tensioned by the springy compressional star-weave of branches on opposite side of hoop beneath the tensioned hide), and even the Greek antikthera mechanisms triangled-cog wheels...
ReplyDeleteThis small dome/shield evolution allowed development of the thatched cone- wicker&daub drum hut found in dryer, colder and windier places poorly suited for the thin-walled branch&leaf domes of the rainforest.
Rota is thread radiated out, not red/roja/rouge, not sure about ruti/ruth. Possibly rut-red from bleeding root?
Shield/star of David & Seal of Solomon were adopted by diaspora Jews as symbol, I think. I'm not describing the symbol, just the physical items.

A wagons' tongue links wheeled cab to puller, did merkaba have a kind of tongue/hinge?
ReplyDeleteNo, the merkaba did not have a hinge that I can think of. It was 4 wheels rotating inside each other (Stonehenge?)and cube shape. The wheels (ophanim) were at the "foot" of the cube. The cube was formed by the wings of "chayot". From what I can determine, a rectangle and a square were not differentiated. Each chayot has 4 "faces" which has been compared to cardinal directions but I disagree. Other beings, Seraphim, are made of fire. This entire vehicle is being guided by "the likeness of man" (Ka?)
ReplyDeleteSusan
Actually, the "seal" could be a hinge-type symbol. Mummies were sealed and a special ceremony (opening of the mouth) had to occur before the Ka and Ba could unite.
ReplyDeleteOssuary's had a mark that "sealed" the lid to the base. The X was half on the lid and half on the bottom.Biblical Anthros say the X is to tell which way the lid fits but why not then just turn it around if it did not fit? Opening the seal was the job of Anubis (dog scavenger) just as it was the Vulture (bird scavenger) of Globeki Tepe.

Any link beteen bennnu and hennu bark mentioned here?
ReplyDeletehttp://structuralarchaeology.blogspot.com/2009/11/notes-queries-sledges.html
I could not find a link. Great blog on the sledge though.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that the hennu bark enters the creature through it's tail (hind) and journeys through it's gut before exiting though the mouth.
Susan
That's interesting, the seal could be a 'hinged' lid (even if not actually physically hinged by a strap).
ReplyDeleteThat would link Solomons Seal to Shield of David, which share geometry but in different functions.
Also I realized that lid (a shield shell lid) may link to sled, as sedge to sledge, wedge to edge.
DDeden
The ring could be a "torc" which is 2 metals twisted together. Arabic legends say the ring was copper and iron. The torc, in turn, represents the labyrinth of Daedalus or whorl. The Minotaur is imprisoned in the labyrinth and Solomon captured "Jinn" with his seal. He could also control animals with it and minotaur was half animal. The Daedalus myth has many similarities to David/Solomon and Bennu. Daedalus' son Icharus flew too close to the sun and fell to the earth. Solomon collected too much gold and lost his united kingdom.
ReplyDeleteWatson, I think I've got it!
ReplyDeleteThe Phoenix fire bird was actually an advanced Zorasterian space shuttle that broke up and crash-landed in Yam Suph:
the flamed-out multi-stage D'jet rocket tube landed at the Egyptian shore,
while the ibis/vulture-like winged foresection with 7 burning "candle rockets" landed upside-down (menorah) at the Israelian shore.
von Dannikin was right after all!
